How to Set Up IPTV on a Samsung or LG Smart TV
Watch IPTV on a Samsung (Tizen) or LG (webOS) Smart TV without extra hardware. Find the right app, activate it and fix common issues.
If you own a recent Samsung or LG television, you may not need a streaming stick at all. Both brands let you install IPTV player apps directly on the TV, so you can watch with the remote you already use every day.
The process is a little different from a Firestick, mainly because Smart TV apps are activated in a different way. This guide covers both brands, explains how activation works, and lists the fixes for the problems people run into most often.
Before you start: check your TV
- Samsung Smart TVs run an operating system called Tizen. Most models from 2017 onward have access to IPTV player apps in the Samsung app store.
- LG Smart TVs run webOS. Most models from 2018 onward offer IPTV players in the LG Content Store.
- Older or entry-level models may have a limited app selection. If you cannot find a compatible player, a Fire TV Stick is the easiest workaround. See our Firestick setup guide.
You also need your IPTV login details (username, password and server URL, or an M3U playlist link) and a reliable internet connection. Smart TVs often have weaker Wi-Fi than streaming sticks, so a wired Ethernet connection is strongly recommended for 4K.
How Smart TV IPTV apps work
On a Firestick, you usually type your login details directly into the player app. Many Smart TV players work differently:
- You install the player app from the TV's app store.
- When you open it, the app shows a MAC address and sometimes a device key. These identify your TV.
- You go to the app developer's website on your phone or computer, enter the MAC address and key, and add your playlist or login details there.
- You restart the app on the TV, and your channels appear.
Many of these players offer a free trial period and then charge a small one-time activation fee to the app developer. That fee is separate from your IPTV subscription. Some players also accept Xtream Codes login directly on the TV, which skips the website step.
When you order or start a free trial with us, tell us your TV brand and model year. We recommend a player that works well on your exact TV and send you the matching instructions.
How to set up IPTV on a Samsung Smart TV
- Press the Home button on your remote and open Apps.
- Select the search icon and type the name of the player app we recommended.
- Select the app, then Install. When it finishes, select Open.
- Write down the MAC address (and the device key if shown) displayed on the screen.
- On your phone or computer, open the player's official website and find its playlist upload or "manage device" page.
- Enter the MAC address and key, then add your M3U link or your Xtream Codes details (server URL, username, password).
- Return to the TV, close the app completely and open it again. Your channel list and program guide load.
Samsung tips:
- To fully close an app, press and hold the Back button, or restart the TV by holding the power button until the logo appears.
- If the app store looks empty or apps fail to install, go to Settings → Support → Software Update and update the TV first.
- Turn off Auto Motion Plus (sometimes called Picture Clarity) if fast sports look unnatural to you.
How to set up IPTV on an LG Smart TV
- Press the Home button and open the LG Content Store (called Apps on newer models).
- Search for the player app we recommended and select Install.
- Open the app and note the MAC address and device key on the screen.
- On your phone or computer, go to the player's official website and enter those details.
- Add your M3U link or Xtream Codes login and save.
- Restart the app on the TV. Your channels appear after a short loading time.
LG tips:
- If installation fails, check that your TV's region in Settings → General → Location is set to the USA or Canada. The app selection depends on this setting.
- Turn off Quick Start+ if the app keeps showing an old channel list after changes. That setting keeps the TV in a sleep state instead of truly restarting it.
- Under Picture settings, the Standard or Filmmaker mode usually gives the most natural image.
Wired or wireless: which is better on a Smart TV?
Many TVs, including high-end models, have a 100 Mbps Ethernet port and a modest Wi-Fi chip. That may sound slow, but 100 Mbps is still several times what a single 4K stream needs. The advantage of a cable is stability, not raw speed: it avoids the drops and interference that cause buffering on Wi-Fi.
If running a cable is not practical, try these alternatives:
- Powerline adapters carry the network over your home's electrical wiring.
- A mesh Wi-Fi point placed in the same room as the TV.
- The 5 GHz Wi-Fi band instead of 2.4 GHz, if your TV supports it.
Our article on what internet speed you need for 4K explains how to test your connection properly.
Troubleshooting common Smart TV issues
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| "Playlist not found" after activation | Re-enter the MAC address on the website and check it digit by digit. Then fully restart the TV. |
| Channels show but play with no sound | In the player's settings, change the audio output or the player engine. |
| App disappeared after a TV update | Reinstall it from the app store. Your MAC address usually stays the same, so your playlist comes back. |
| Picture freezes every few minutes | Try a wired connection and see our guide to fixing IPTV buffering. |
| Second TV cannot play at the same time | Each TV Plus One plan includes 1 active screen. Stop playback on the first device before switching. |
Should you use the TV app or a streaming stick?
Using the TV's own app means one less device and one less remote. A streaming stick is often faster, gets updates more often, and gives you a wider choice of player apps. If your TV is more than five or six years old, its processor may struggle with large channel lists, and a stick is usually the better experience.
Either way, the subscription is the same: you can move between devices whenever you like, as long as only one is playing at a time.
